PALACE OF DIOCLETANUS
Spectacular atmosphere in the old part of Split. However, no Green Men to be
seen. |

After Christianity set foot on shore, the Roman temple was
converted into a church, including this impressive tower |
 On
the tower the symbol of the victorious Church (lion) crushing its "enemies" e.g.
pagan belief.... |
 Paganism
symbolized by a goat |
A first Green Man, apparently in great distress |
 From
a very large distance I only saw the leaves and not the face under. It is a pity because
this could be a King/Queen with a crown of leaves! |
 The
crypt under the church. Nowadays turned into a tourist object |
 A
Roman theater mask as decoration to the church |
 Later
a Green Man face was added |
A goat as symbol of the temptation of "natural
lusts" |
In the city the first encounters with some well-known
images |
Altogether it wasn't too much. So I set my hope on the
Archeological Museum of Split. Beautifully located with a lush garden and entry free! The
open wings of the museum filled with (sacred) Roman art |
Right at the entrance a beautiful Green Man (or Woman) |
 Vessel
of Abundance |

Life on earth the Dionysian way |
 Nature
as paradise |
 Abundance,
fertility, sexual pleasure all aspects of the same life force |
Grave stone of Roman citizin. On top the grenate apple,
symbol of Great Mother Kybele |
 On
top on both sides two very beautiful masks, most likely a mixture of a River God and a
Green Man |
