Leiden was a total surprise for me. (Although I spent many
years of my youth there). At a first sight the Pieters Kerk (Church) showed all the sights
of Calvinist "clean-up". After the Reformation it took over the State. All
previous (catholic) memories were destroyed. The result: an empty church ("An empty
church is our God", how right they were) with only uniform neutral (boring) capitals |

Before leaving the church I was drawn to the organ. It had
something peculiar about it. It was built around 1490, early Renaissance. Suddenly I saw
these faces: black with golden masks. And others with the Attis cap. While in the centre
this little female! monster with breasts. Strong intuition supported by visits to
countless churches all over Europe gave me a first clue. This couldn't be true! In the
bulwark of Dutch Calvinism I found a key drama of pre-Christian faith: MotherGoddess
Kybele and Her Sons/Gods. I don't think that anybody has seen this scene before, ever.

My theory is that this scene came from Spain. (Holland at
that time was Spanish territory). Especially churches in Northern Spain (Leon, Santiago de
C.) show similarities. The Church had turned Kybele, at the centre of "the
universe", into the Destructive "Bitch-Mother", surrounded by Her
black-faced Son/Gods. Black Stone (meteorite) being Her symbol. These Green Men (leaves
clearly present) wear crowns, indicating the respect they received from the people. In
Leon the king is also portrayed as a Green Man (Many other kings of those times also,
including Louis IX of France). |
